Photo # 15: Iso Grifo
This photo shows the more rare Carello OEM headlights, which are standard-fit 5 ¾” round, with the normal, European halogen replaceable-bulb set-up. Carello lights are made in Italy / the same country where this rare Iso was built. The units shown in this photo are more rare because the outer headlights do not contain the more common OEM H4 halogen high/low beam / dual-filament bulbs. They contain the H1 single-filament bulbs. The lenses are different from the H4 headlights also, in which only the upper 55% of the lens is used. The H1 bulb is a single-filament bulb, thus these are considered the rarely-seen “H1 low beams”.
Inside the “H1 low beam” headlamp units is a special bulb shield, external from the bulb, that prevents light from the H1 bulb from reflecting off of the lower 45% of the reflector. An H4 bulb has the internal (inside the bulb), lower light-blocking bulb shield built in under the low beam filament. With the H4 bulb, when the headlight circuit is switched to “high beam”, 100% of the reflector and 100% of the lens is used.
The more rare H1 low beams (one outer headlamp shown in the photo) stay on the same filament when the high beams (one inner headlamp shown in the photo) are turned on, thus the overall four-headlight beam pattern is different than if the more common Carello H4/H1 combo was used.
Some European headlight terminology is as follows; In Europe, the term “Low beam” is more commonly referred to as “Meeting beam”, and the term “High beam” is more commonly referred to as “Main beam”. Also, in Europe, the term “Headlight” is more commonly described as “Headlamp”.
